Pitney Bowes: Printing Solutions for Mailing and Commercial Enterprises

While not originally a printing manufacturer, Pitney Bowes has expanded into the sector in order to offer supplies to its mailing customers. Founded in 1920, the company developed its reputation through the production of mailing equipment, such as postage meters. In fact, it was the first to develop a commercially available postage meter.

As technology marched on, the company had to adapt its product offering to suit the evolving needs of its clientele. Today, Pitney Bowes is a renowned supplier of e-commerce services and software. However, it’s the company’s range of printing solutions that help it to stand out among commercial clients. Today, it provides services to 90% of the companies on the Fortune 500 list, as well as 1.5 million small businesses.

Partnership with Riso

As part of its efforts to develop the most efficient printers on the market, Pitney Bowes partnered with Riso to create its ComColor FW Inkjet printers.

Capable of printing off a staggering 120 pages per minute, these printers have a genuine focus towards the mailing sector. However, businesses of all types find that such rapid printing benefits them. Simply put, Pitney Bowes’ ComColor printers can blast through large printing jobs faster than most others on the market.

The company’s inks also stand out. With their oil base, they dry quickly to protect against smudging. They’re also water and fade resistant, ensuring high-quality printouts, regardless of job size. The heatless printing technology built into their printers also means they need less energy and suffer from fewer maintenance issues due to overheating.

Its ComColor GD range keeps the Inkjet manufacturing model, but it speeds things up even more. This model can print 160 pages per minute, all with the same qualities as the FW range. All told, Pitney Bowes’ ComColor range can handle hundreds of thousands of printouts per month, making it the choice of many large-scale manufacturers.

The IntelliJet range

Pitney Bowes delves deeper into the mailing and commercial markets with its IntelliJet range. These enormous printers meet the needs of companies that offer mail operations or require transactional printing.

These printers don’t work like the one you have at home. They take input from rolls of paper, printing as the roll runs through the system. This allows for rapid printing, but it’s the extra features that really help the printer to stand out. Add-ons allow the printer to automatically cut and sort paper rolls, and it can even insert its final printouts into envelopes ready for mailing.

It’s an enormous printer suitable for mass printing requirements. It also comes with a proprietary software, which allows users to manage large-scale print jobs without having to physically interrupt the machine.

Its IntelliJet 20 HD model can print off over 150 meters of paper per minute. This amounts to a production cycle of 60 million letter-sized images per month.

The 42 HD model ups the ante even further, being capable of printing 305 meters of paper per minute. This creates a monthly cycle of 210 million letter-sized images.

It’s a specialized commercial printer that leverages the company’s knowledge of the mailing industry.

A Dedicated Environmental Policy

Such powerful printing has the potential to produce a lot of waste. Pitney Bowes was one of the first companies to create a hardware take back program, which it uses to prevent its printers from ending up in the waste cycle.

The company commits to recycling as much as possible, but it also aims to make its products energy efficient. In 2015, Pitney Bowes managed to reduce its overall carbon emissions by 15%. It has longer-term goals that should bring these emissions down even further.
